The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) () is a state-level selection commission established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to perform functions related to the recruitment and selection of teachers and instructors in the state. The Commission was established under the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission Act, 2023, which was enacted on 21 August 2023. The Act lays down the provisions relating to the composition, powers, duties, determination of vacancies and selection procedure of the Commission and appointment of selected candidates.
History The process of establishing the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission began in 2023. The Uttar Pradesh government established the commission to unify the selection process for teachers and instructors for various educational institutions in the state. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission Act, 2023, was enacted on August 21, 2023. According to the Act, the commission is headquartered in Prayagraj. Subsequently, the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission Rules, 2023, were notified on December 13, 2023.
Chairman Prashant Kumar, a retired 1990 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and former Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh Police, was appointed Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission in December 2025. He assumed charge as Chairman of the Commission on 19 December 2025.
Members The Commission consists of a Chairperson and 12 members. In March 2024, the Higher Education Department of the Uttar Pradesh government appointed the 12 members of the Commission. The appointed members included officials from the Education Department and individuals with experience in higher and secondary education.
Functions and responsibilities The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission's primary function is to conduct examinations and selection processes for the recruitment of teachers and instructors for various government and aided educational institutions in the state. The commission's functions include determining vacancies, selecting candidates, and recommending selected candidates for appointment. The commission oversees recruitment processes for various positions related to basic, secondary, higher, and vocational education. Examinations and recruitment The Commission conducts various examinations and recruitment processes for the selection of teachers and instructors. Its statutory functions include conducting examinations for teacher and instructor recruitment, selecting candidates, and recommending selected candidates for appointment. The Commission also conducts the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET). In 2026 the Commission conducted various teacher recruitment examinations and recruitment processes for posts including UPTET. Organisation The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission consists of a Chairperson and twelve members, all appointed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Commission's members include individuals from the fields of administration, higher education, vocational education, secondary education, basic education, judicial service, and education.
A selection committee has been constituted by the State Government for the selection of the Chairman and members of the Commission.
Recent developments The Uttar Pradesh Education Services Selection Commission released the schedule for the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 and other recruitment exams in January 2026. UPTET 2026 was initially scheduled to be held in July.
In December 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government amended the eligibility criteria for the commission's chairperson. This change sparked political controversy, with the opposition questioning the appointment of former Director General of Police Prashant Kumar.
