The End of Everything is a 2026 post-apocalyptic novel by M. John Harrison, published in the UK by Serpent's Tail. Harrison's 13th novel, it was shortlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize.
Plot The story takes place in a near-future south-east England devastated by the iGhetti: "monstrously sized, extremely powerful and strange lifeforms" of unknown origin and uncertain purpose. The protagonist, Philip Tennent, lives with his aunt Marnie in the coastal town of Dalston-on-Sea and ekes out a living by collecting – and endeavouring to sell – iGhetti "artefacts" that wash up on the shore. One particular artefact he finds has the potential to change their lives for ever.
Reception Writing in The Guardian, reviewer Michel Faber described it as a "dreamlike and baffling" work that "elucidates humanity's disintegrating existence with strange clarity".
The End of Everything was one of 13 books longlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize.
