The 2026 Kolkata Municipal Corporation election will be held within December 7, 2026 tentatively to elect 209 members of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) which governs Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Background In 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Bharatiya Janata Party got a majority by winning 208 seats out of 294 seats and this marked the end of 15-year rule of Trinamool Congress.
Soon after the defeat, factionalism within TMC intensified and more than two-thirds of TMC MLAs joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee with Banerjee becoming Leader of Opposition and 20 Lok Sabha MPs merged with Nationalist Citizens Party of India which became part of National Democratic Alliance. There are allegations that BJP tacitly operated these splits.
In this scenario, the Left parties led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) hit the streets in various issues including unlawful hawker eviction without rehabilitation, 'bulldozer raj', S.I.R., Baruipur rape and murder case, fascistic violence to stop dissents and oppositions, insulting speeches against progressive icons like Rabindranath Tagore, Vladimir Lenin, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sukanta Bhattacharya, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee and Rahul Sankrityayan by BJP leaders and vandalism of their statues and portraits by BJP supporters, attack on Jadavpur University by ABVP goons and corruptions in education system. Left, secular, progressive and democratic student organisations played an instrumental role in 2026 Delhi Jantar Mantar protests and took out a huge rally in Kolkata. Gradually, the Left rose as the effective opposition in West Bengal.
