Withington, is an electoral division of Manchester City Council which has been represented since 1904. It covers the South Manchester suburb of Withington.
Overview
Withington ward was created in 1904,MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS, Manchester Guardian, November 2, 1904, p.9 as a result of the Manchester Extension Scheme 1904, which transferred the urban districts of Moss Side and Withington to the Manchester corporation.CITY EXTENSIONS, Manchester Courier, November 7, 1904, p.2 Initially, the ward's boundaries corresponded with those of the Fallowfield and Withington wards of the former Withington Urban District, these boundaries were not affected by a city-wide boundary revision in 1919. In 1950,TORIES' NET GAIN OF TWO SEATS IN MANCHESTER, Manchester Guardian, May 12, 1950, p.8 that part of the ward to the east of Parrs Wood Road was transferred to the new Burnage ward, while that part of the ward to the west of Burton Road and Wilmslow Road was transferred to the new Old Moat ward. After a further boundary revision in 1971,Tories toppled in twin cities landslide, Manchester Evening News, May 14, 1971, p.16 the ward's western boundary became the Styal Line, these boundaries were left unchanged by another city-wide boundary revision in 1982.Manchester City Council Election Results, 2nd Edition, Swarbrick (1993). In 2004, the southern portion of the ward was transferred to the new Didsbury East ward. From its creation until 1918, the ward formed part of the Stretford Parliamentary constituency.Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 c.23, Schedule 6: Divisions of Boroughs Since 1918, it has been part of the Manchester Withington Parliamentary constituency.
