Holy Trinity Church is a historic Church of South India church in Ooty (Ootacamund), Tamil Nadu, India. Its origins are connected with the Ootacamund Tamil Mission and a small chapel established for the town's Indian Christian congregation during the 19th century. The building was used for worship on Sundays and as a school during the week before being formally dedicated as Holy Trinity Church in 1858.

The church is associated with the missionary work of Bernhard Schmid and the Tamil scholar George Uglow Pope. During the 19th century it developed from a chapel serving Tamil Christians into an established congregation, later passing into the administration of the Church Mission Society before becoming part of the Church of South India in 1947.

History

The origins of the congregation are connected with the Ootacamund Tamil Mission established by the German missionary Bernhard Schmid. Schmid worked among Tamil migrants in the Nilgiris during the 1830s and organised a Tamil Christian congregation at Ootacamund in 1832.

A small chapel was built in 1844 for the growing Tamil congregation. Services were associated with the chaplaincy of St. Stephen's Church, while the chapel also functioned as a school. Schmid returned to the Nilgiris in the mid-1840s and continued missionary and educational work among the Tamil population.

After his departure on health grounds, a committee was formed in 1851 to oversee the Ootacamund Tamil Mission. Its members included the missionaries and scholars Robert Caldwell and George Uglow Pope. The chapel and schoolroom were subsequently enlarged, and by 1852 the congregation was reported to number about 200 worshippers.

Pope remained connected with the mission, preaching periodically and assisting with communion services. The building was formally dedicated as Holy Trinity Church in 1858.

Management of the Ootacamund Tamil Mission was transferred to the Church Mission Society in 1867. The mission remained under its administration until the formation of the Church of South India in 1947.

During the early 20th century a proposal to sell the church building was abandoned following opposition from the Rev. Moorhouse, who took charge in 1909. The church was renovated in 1929, when an altar and a bell tower were added. By the 1940s, Indian clergy had increasingly assumed responsibility for its ministry; C. S. Paulraj became the first Indian presbyter to hold full charge.

Holy Trinity Church celebrated its centenary in 1958 and its sesquicentennial in November 2008.

Building and heritage

The present building incorporates alterations made during different phases of its history. The original chapel was enlarged during the 1850s, while the 1929 renovation introduced an altar and bell tower.

Holy Trinity Church has been documented in architectural heritage surveys of Ootacamund undertaken by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). It appears in INTACH's 1993 survey of Ooty and neighbouring settlements and again in its 2014 architectural listing of the Nilgiris district.
